The Lumen Metabolism Tracker: What You Need To Know!
I am curious being by nature. I ask a lot of questions in life, and I do a ton of research. Some people knit, I research. Give me a computer and google, and I am one happy camper. As a personal trainer, my favorite research topic is health and wellness. I am fascinated by how technology plays a more prominent role in meeting our fitness goals. When I came across the Lumen metabolism tracker, I was immediately intrigued. I had to dig deeper and check it out for myself.
I have been using the Lumen metabolism tracker and lumen app for a few months now. Enough time for me to get a handle on how the Lumen works to help improve your metabolic health.
Let’s start with the basics.
What Is The Lumen Metabolic Tracker?
Lumen is the world’s first handheld, portable device to accurately measure metabolism in a single breath (or two). Metabolic testing is open to everyone once available only to top professional athletes in hospitals and clinics. Lumen is a metabolic breath analyzer that can tell whether you’re using carbohydrates or fat for fuel based on your co2 concentration. Lumen is also the first handheld device and portable metabolic breath analyzer (that I know of) to get insights into their metabolic rate. I am always saying that everyone’s body is so different, which helps you get an individualized look at your metabolic measurement. How cool is that?! You get instant feedback on how your body is processing carbs and fats. Are you a carb-burning or a fat-burning? The Lumen will tell you. And then, based on your “lumen flex score,” the app creates meal plans for you based on your body’s needs for that day. Using macronutrient manipulation to help you improve your flexible metabolism, leading you to healthy weight loss that is sustainable. What exactly is macronutrient manipulation? Low carb days decrease the insulin spike, thus improving insulin sensitivity and depleting your body’s carb stores, enhancing mitochondrial function. High carb days ensure your body’s ability to use carbs for energy and keep hormones in balance. Good metabolic flexibility enables you to switch up your fuel source of fat or carbs and hack your body’s metabolism. #geekingout
Lumen consists of a CO2 sensor and a flow meter that measures how much air you inhale and exhale from a technical perspective. The device connects to an app (available in the apple app store and on google play) running on your phone via Bluetooth, where all your data is stored and interpreted.
*Research (Calcada et al., Gormsen et al.) finds that metabolic flexibility has a profound role in assessing a person’s health. People with good metabolic flexibility:
- Find it easier to lose weight and maintain it.
- Are in a better position to gain muscle and perform better during workouts.
- Are at lower risk of developing obesity, diabetes, and metabolic disorders.
Michal and Merav Mor, twin sisters with PhDs in Physiology, co-founded Lumen and act as Head of Science for Product and Head of Research and Science, respectively. The sisters conceived of the idea for a personal metabolic tracker as they trained for an Ironman race. Determined to improve their fitness and race times, the scientists sought out a way to track and test their metabolism to achieve peak fitness.
“While metabolism is key to weight loss, the only way to test metabolism was through a restrictive, hours-long laboratory process, leaving regular people with zero visibility into their metabolic rate and only haphazard ways of improving it,” said Michal Mor, co-founder and Head of Science for Product, Lumen. “With Lumen, we are bringing scientifically rigorous insight into personal metabolism for the very first time, allowing anyone at home to measure how efficient their body is at burning calories, but also sharing research-driven recommendations on how they can reach their health and fitness goals faster.”
The Lumen can provide numerous insights about the metabolism of an individual and valuable scientific data to increase knowledge of metabolic flexibility and nutrition. In a San Francisco State University study, Lumen has been validated to meet the gold standard for metabolic measurement.
I love that this is a company run by women!
How to Use the Lumen Metabolism Tracker?
To begin, it is best to start with your first reading first thing in the morning. You’ll open the lumen app, follow the instructions to inhale, hold your breath for 10 seconds, exhale, then await the results, which follow a few seconds later and tell you exactly what type of fuel your body is currently burning: mostly fats, mostly carbs, or somewhere in between. A Score of 1-5, 1 being total fat burn and five burning carbs.
When you use your handheld lumen device, you may have trouble with your first couple of readings. It is trickier than it looks. But don’t worry, the more you work with it, the easier it gets. It is a good idea to watch the video tutorial within the companion app. You can also link your Lumen to your apple watch and apple health for even more tracking options.
The whole process should take about 3-5 minutes to get an accurate reading of your lumen level. (1-5)
Does The Lumen Tracker Work?
Often referred to as the gold standard for a metabolic wellness device. Lumen has received rave reviews for big names in health wellness, such as Dave Asprey of Bulletproof and Heidi Powell. There is a reason for all of the excitement surrounding this new health technology company. Lumen has completed years of scientific testing in research labs to build the Lumen. It is an entirely new way to get real time information about our metabolic health.
One million monthly metabolism measurements have proven that Lumen users can:
- Lose an average of 0.5 kg or 1.5 pounds of weight per week consistently
- Improve their metabolic flexibility by 66%
- Improve fasting windows to 12 hours daily
- Increase their daily physical activity and movement by 1000 steps
The Lumen device and app enable users to maximize their wellness:
- Like having a nutritionist in your pocket – Know what and when to eat to fuel your workout and support fat burn.
- Customize your nutrition – Get daily personalized meal plans. Know exactly what to eat and when.
- Workout optimization – See if you have enough energy before a workout or if you need to fuel up. Breathe afterward to see the impact on your body.
- Monitor and improve your metabolic health – Over time, Lumen tracks your metabolism, sleep, nutrition, and fitness data to provide a Lumen Flex Score, which reflects your success and helps sustain results.
Once you get the hang of how to breathe and complete a measurement, every day after measuring your first morning breath, you will be a daily nutrition plan indicating your carb servings, fat servings, and the amount of protein you should consume that day. And then you do it all over again the next morning, and your reading will indicate each day what your macros should look like for that day—helping you to work towards your ultimate goal of weight loss.
This is a very useful tool, but it is important to note that it does not work accurately for those on a Keto diet. You will not see a lower number if your body is in Ketosis, which is causing you to have higher Co2 levels, which indicates that you are burning more carbs rather than fat. So if you are low carb, then the Lumen will work, but if you are strict Keto, the Lumen will not work for you.
I have to mention that Lumen has a fantastic premium customer support standing by to answer any questions!
