How To Find Your Purpose? 10 Simple Questions To Ask Yourself.

·

How to find your purpose? If that’s not a loaded question, I don’t know what it is. I do believe each and every one of us chose to be on this planet to share our special gifts and natural talents to make the world a better place. We all have something within us; we are meant to share. These gifts help us express and share our life purpose or life mission.

I have always loved the quote by Mark Twain, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born, and the day you find out why.”

Finding out why we were born is the tricky part. We start to develop a set of talents and gifts that come naturally to us from a young age. But often, life, overzealous and good-meaning parents put a kibosh on what comes so naturally to us, shifting our focus to “where the money is.” Or they even chose to push us down a path to live vicariously through us. And as children, we lived to make our parents proud and to earn their Love, so we may have pushed aside what we wanted in hopes of making those we love, love us.

So with time, what was so apparent and obvious became overlayed with the opinions, criticism, and the expectations of others. We fell asleep and trudged forward, burying that little voice inside us that was screaming to be heard and shared with the world.

If you are here reading this post, you are on the right path. You are ready to take the next step and move forward into discovering your life’s purpose, and that is super exciting! You have felt a nudge and a push to search for a greater sense of purpose and sense of meaning. You, my dear friend, are ready to discover your why!

In this post, I will walk you through a simple exercise. I will ask you the following questions you most likely have never asked yourself. These questions are meant to help you uncover the reason why you were born, or as so many like to call it, your purpose of life. This true purpose is the reason why you are here. It is calling to you, hoping you’ll hear it and wake up and remember it.

Where does your mind/interest naturally go when you don’t think about work, bills, or responsibilities?

Think about what you do when you have free time, what interests you most? It is an important thing to think back to your childhood and adolescent years. What things from a young age brought you joy? Think beyond binging Netflix, video games, social media, and other “filler” activities. A better way to ask this question is what fills you up and rejuvenates you.

What group are you most passionate about? (i.e., children, teens, elderly, animals, etc.)

Think about your life experience. Who do you feel naturally drawn to helping? When you close your eyes and think about the lessons you have learned along the way, who needs to hear them. How have they made you better able to help? Do you have a strong natural empathy for a specific group of people? Where do you enjoy volunteering? These are little clues to help get you going in the right direction.

What topics are you most passionate about? (i.e., food, fashion, design, finance, personal growth, addiction, health, relationships, etc.)

Think about your core values. What causes are you most drawn to? What lights you up inside? What are you drawn to researching and learning more about?

What does the world need?

When you look around and view the world, what do you notice? Do you see an area where you can make a positive impact? Do you see an area that feels underserved or not addressed enough, such as mental health? There are so many different ways to serve the world. Keep an open mind and listen to your own inner compass for direction on how you can help.

What was your plan for your life before you came here (to planet earth)?

This question may seem odd, but your soul knows the answer. You will need to get quiet and access your subconscious mind via meditation to answer this one. This takes trusting what comes up when you sit in quiet for a good amount of time. I often feel the answer more than hear it when I am looking for answers on a deeper level.

What is your gift to the world?

Again this question is one you feel more than know inherently. Spend time in mediation. Meditate on this question alone, and the answer will come in. And you will feel that stronger sense of purpose within you.

What do you want to be remembered for? What do you want your legacy to be?

This may feel morbid at first, but imagine you are visiting your funeral after you have passed on. What do you want those at your funeral to remember about you. What amazing things do you want to be remembered for? What did you contribute to make your life a purposeful life?

What are 20 things you’re good at or like to do?

Clues to your life’s purpose will be in what brings joy. Clues will also be in what you naturally are good at and what comes easily to you. A lot of people will discount their gifts because they are just easy! But what is easy and natural for us in our own lives may be a big struggle for someone else. SO pretty, please write it all down! You may have a knack for hand lettering, but because it’s easy, you would never think that your gift and purpose is to share that gift with the world via beautiful handmade cards on Etsy or teaching online workshops! Our purpose doesn’t always mean we need to show up on big stages and share with the entire world. Our voice and gifts may be needed within our small communities!

What are 30 things you want in life? (material or non-material)

Write down all your goals? What do you feel called to do in life? Even the area where you often choose to set goals is a clue. If you look over your life and what areas of your daily life speak to you the most. What areas of your life do you feel a strong sense of purpose? Think about your career paths. Where have you naturally been drawn to? Does it still fit? Do you feel your professional life is in alignment with your life’s purpose? What have been your main struggles and lessons in life?

Our personal experiences and struggles are typically placed in our lives for a reason. You were meant to learn something and share what you learned to help others in their lives. These big things in our lives that may have felt heavy at the time are the lessons we needed; to help us get out of our comfort zone and step into our purpose. These struggles we have overcome may be precisely why we are here to help others do the same.

Meditation and Journaling will help you as you work to answer the question of how to find your purpose.

This is soul work. Answering how to find your purpose is not easy work. It takes digging deep and getting in alignment with the highest version of ourselves. It means tearing away what no longer serves us and being brave enough to take that first step into the unknown.

As a mom and watching Frozen and Frozen II about a million times, I always think about Elsa, particularly in the second movie. She hears a voice calling her, and she knows she needs to listen and follow it, although it is taking her away from everything comfortable.

When I walk more in alignment with where I know I am called to go, I often feel that way. It scares the heck out of me. I can feel the nudge with every part of my being, and I know I will need to do new things and be brave and courageous.

As you, too, choose to become more in alignment with your true calling, you may feel scared and unsure. That is normal! Keep coming back to listening and taking those small steps. You are being guided; your team of angels and guides surround you cheering and guiding you on as you step into the reason why you were born.

As a life coach, I help others step into their purpose. If you feel you would like some one-on-one guidance, I would love to help! (That’s my purpose!) please email me at andie{at}andiethueson.com

Years ago we had a lunch meeting with the brother of a friend who had just died. We were chatting about his brother and about life in general and then he asked us this question: “What is your purpose? What do you want to do with the rest of your life?” I struggled with the question because it’s such a HUGE question. And coming in the wake of the death of his brother it felt heavy. And then he proceeded to try to recruit us for a multi-level marketing scheme.

Thank you for your insight into life purpose and discovering what drives us. I think everyone goes through periods in their lives in which they have to refocus and figure out anew who they are and what they need from life. Having the tools to unlock that is so freeing.

    1. What a weird segway into recruitment… Geez. I bet that was awkward.
Focusing on what drives us is always a good use of time. Shine bright dear friend!

  4. This is really a great article I really like and will definitely share it widely with my friends, wish you always have good health and make more articles in the future. thank you
