Why you should care about Hydration.

I want to tell you a little story about my friend Dustin.

While Dustin was enrolled in his first year of medical school at age 24 he was asked to help out with a service project on a  Saturday. No big thing, Dustin was a helpful guy and super fit. He welcomed the opportunity to help. He spent the entire day helping to clear land. As a result of becoming dehydrated Dustin suffered a stroke induced by dehydration. Luckily Dustin was able to recognize the signs immediately with his medical training and get attention quickly… This saved his life.

As a result of this scary incident that resulted in 3 months of recovery. Dustin has dedicated his life and his skills to developing smarter sensing technology for real time action that help accurately track hydration levels. His goal is both to prevent others from suffering a similar fate and to help people enjoy the full benefits of staying properly hydrated, including: better sleep, clearer thinking, improved exercise ability, healthier skin, weight reduction and much more

That’s why you should care about Hydration!!

I know I talk a lot about water and why it is soooo important! Yes drinking water will help you to lose wight, but more importantly staying properly hydrated can save your life!

Hydration is KEY to health and wellness and might just save your life!

One of the major problems with hydration is that we’ve been taught our thirst drive is a sufficient and accurate measure of our hydration. In reality, our body’s natural signals only keep us from running empty. Studies have shown  that an athlete who is just 1 to 2 percent below the ideal hydration level will suffer from a nearly 6 percent drop in performance. Crazy right!! And athletes aren’t the only ones who suffer from dehydration – it can have serious impacts on anyone, just ask my friend Dustin… 

Research as shown that 70% of the American public lives in a state of chronic dehydration. We are simply not staying properly hydrated! 

Here are some signs that you may be suffering from light to heavy dehydration… {information from Mayo Clinic} – Knowing these signs and watching for them can help save your life!

Mild to Moderate Dehydration Symptoms

  • Dry, sticky mouth
  • Sleepiness or tiredness — children are likely to be less active than usual
  • Thirst
  • Decreased urine output
  • No wet diapers for three hours for infants
  • Few or no tears when crying
  • Dry skin
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

Severe Dehydration Symptoms

  • Extreme thirst
  • Extreme fussiness or sleepiness in infants and children; irritability and confusion in adults
  • Very dry mouth, skin and mucous membranes
  • Little or no urination — any urine that is produced will be darker than normal
  • Sunken eyes
  • Shriveled and dry skin that lacks elasticity and doesn’t “bounce back” when pinched into a fold
  • In infants, sunken fontanels — the soft spots on the top of a baby’s head
  • Low blood pressure
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Rapid breathing
  • No tears when crying
  • Fever
  • In the most serious cases, delirium or unconsciousness

How does one stay properly hydrated…. Every person is so different! – When one person is totally okay on the recommended 8-10 glasses of water a day – somehow else might become severely dehydrated on the same amount. How is one to know what proper hydration looks like for them.

Until now there has been no real tangible way to ensure and track proper hydration.
