GLP-1s: What to Know From My Personal Experience

For a long time, I went back and forth about whether I wanted to share this publicly, and for good cause, people tend to be super judgey as soon as they hear the words GLP-1s, semaglutide, ozempic and the like.

If you’ve been in my world for a while, you know I’m not here for extremes, quick fixes, or anything that disconnects us from our bodies. My work is rooted in nervous system safety, body trust, emotional regulation, and long-term sustainability. So when I decided to use a GLP-1 over a year and a half ago, it wasn’t impulsive, and it definitely wasn’t content-driven.

But after countless questions, quiet curiosity, assumptions, and side conversations, I realized something important: there’s a massive gap between the internet narrative around GLP-1s and the lived, nuanced reality of using them from a holistic health perspective.

So this is me stepping into that gap.

This article is about my personal experience with GLP-1s, the science behind these peptides, and how I see them fitting into a holistic health journey, especially for those navigating insulin resistance, metabolic challenges, or a complicated relationship with food.

No hype. No fear-mongering. Just honesty.

Why I’m Sharing My Experience With GLP-1s

I want to be clear about something right away: I didn’t choose a GLP-1 because I hated my body or wanted to shrink myself.

I chose it because my body needed support.

For years, I had done what most of us are told to do when something feels “off.” I ate well. I prioritized supplements. I worked on my mindset. I regulated my nervous system. I processed emotional patterns. I listened to my intuition. And still, my body felt inflamed, exhausted, and stuck in cycles of blood sugar dysregulation.

At a certain point, continuing to push without additional support stopped feeling empowering and started feeling dismissive of my body’s reality.

Choosing a GLP-1 wasn’t about giving up. It was about responding.

What Are GLP-1s? A Holistic Health Explanation

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1. It’s a peptide your body already produces naturally and plays a key role in regulating blood sugar, insulin secretion, and appetite signaling.

How GLP-1 Peptides Work in the Body

GLP-1 peptides help:

  • Improve insulin sensitivity
  • Regulate blood sugar levels
  • Slow gastric emptying
  • Reduce excessive food noise

When GLP-1 medications are introduced, they’re supporting an existing biological pathway, not overriding it.

This is where a lot of misinformation shows up. GLP-1s aren’t forcing your body to do something unnatural. They’re assisting a system that may already be under-functioning due to stress, inflammation, insulin resistance, or hormonal disruption.

From a holistic health lens, that matters.

GLP-1s Beyond Weight Loss

One of the biggest disservices done to GLP-1s is reducing them to “weight loss drugs.”

Yes, weight loss can be a side effect for some people. But the real conversation is metabolic health.

GLP-1s and Metabolic Health

GLP-1 peptides support:

  • Blood sugar stability
  • Reduced insulin resistance
  • Improved metabolic efficiency

When your metabolism is supported, many other systems calm down as a result, including hunger signaling, inflammation, and nervous system stress.

Weight changes don’t happen in isolation. They happen in response to regulation.

Why I Chose a GLP-1 for Metabolic Support

I didn’t wake up one day and decide to “try” a GLP-1. It was a thoughtful, layered decision made after years of listening to my body and recognizing that effort alone wasn’t the answer.

I was tired of managing symptoms instead of supporting systems.

What resonated most for me was this: GLP-1s don’t override intuition; they often restore it.

When blood sugar is stable and inflammation decreases, your body can actually communicate more clearly. Hunger cues make sense again. Satiety feels safe. Decisions don’t feel frantic.

That was the shift I experienced.

Microdosing GLP-1s: A Holistic Approach That Matters

This part is important.

One of the loudest misconceptions online is that GLP-1s need to be used aggressively to be effective. That hasn’t been my experience at all.

Why Microdosing GLP-1s Works

Microdosing allowed me to:

  • Minimize side effects
  • Maintain nervous system regulation
  • Stay connected to hunger and fullness cues
  • Integrate changes slowly and sustainably

From a holistic health perspective, slower is often safer and more effective long-term.

This isn’t about numbing your body or suppressing signals. It’s about creating enough internal safety for your system to recalibrate.

GLP-1s and Your Relationship With Food

One of the most profound shifts I experienced wasn’t physical; it was relational.

Reducing Food Noise Without Control

Before GLP-1s, food took up a lot of mental space. Not in an obvious way, but in a low-level, constant hum. Planning. Thinking. Managing. Negotiating.

GLP-1s softened that noise.

Not by removing hunger but by reducing urgency.

For the first time in a long time, I could hear my body without anxiety layered on top.

Rebuilding Trust With the Body

This created space for healing my relationship with food, not through restriction, but through regulation.

GLP-1s didn’t “fix” my relationship with food. They gave my nervous system enough breathing room to rebuild trust.

That distinction matters.

A Holistic Health Lens: Not Either/Or

I don’t believe in either/or thinking when it comes to health.

It’s not:

  • GLP-1 or holistic health
  • Science or intuition
  • Peptides or emotional work

It’s both.

What I Still Prioritize Alongside GLP-1s

My foundation didn’t disappear when I added a GLP-1. I still prioritize:

  • Nervous system regulation
  • Emotional processing
  • Nourishing, supportive nutrition
  • Gentle movement
  • Curiosity over judgment

GLP-1s didn’t replace these practices. They complemented them.

Insulin Resistance, Inflammation, and Compassion

One thing I wish we talked about more openly is how much shame lives in conversations about insulin resistance and metabolic health.

Insulin resistance isn’t a personal failure. It’s often a physiological response to chronic stress, trauma, inflammation, hormonal shifts, or genetics.

Approaching it with compassion, not punishment, changes everything.

GLP-1s can be one form of compassionate support.

Emerging Peptides and the Future of Health Optimization

GLP-1s are just the beginning.

There’s an entire world of peptides emerging that support:

  • Inflammation reduction
  • Cellular repair
  • Longevity and vitality
  • Cognitive and metabolic health

This doesn’t mean everyone needs peptides. It means health is becoming more personalized.

Personalization Over Protocols

The future of holistic health isn’t rigid protocols; it’s informed choice.

What works for one body may not work for another. And that’s not a failure; it’s biology.

Staying Curious Instead of Judgmental

Curiosity has changed my health journey more than any supplement ever has.

Judgment tightens the body.
Curiosity opens it.

Whether GLP-1s are right for you or not isn’t the point. The point is feeling empowered to ask questions, understand the science, and make decisions that feel aligned without shame or moralization.

Common Myths About GLP-1s (From a Holistic Perspective)

Let’s clear a few things up:

  • Myth: GLP-1s are “cheating”
Truth: Supporting a biological pathway is not cheating; it’s medicine.
  • Myth: GLP-1s disconnect you from your body
Truth: For many people, they restore communication.
  • Myth: You can’t be holistic and use peptides
Truth: Holistic health includes science, not avoidance of it.

Final Thoughts on GLP-1s and Holistic Health

GLP-1s are not shortcuts.
They’re not failures.
They’re not identities.

They’re tools.

Used intentionally, thoughtfully, and holistically, GLP-1 peptides can support metabolic health, nervous system regulation, and long-term wellbeing, especially when paired with patience, self-trust, and education.

You’re allowed to use support.
You’re allowed to change your mind.
You’re allowed to do health your way.

Stay curious, friends.
